So what is it actually like?

The old money and the loud part

Orlando's oldest blocks: brick streets in Winter Park, bungalows in College Park, and a downtown that empties out at six and fills up again at nine. You are paying for walkability and shade, and there is not much of either left unclaimed. The trade is space — a Winter Park bungalow is a Winter Garden garage.

Stop 1 of 4Thornton Park

Lake Eola

A sinkhole in the middle of downtown, with swan boats on it.

A mile around the water, a farmers market on Sundays, and the fountain the city puts on its own logo.

What's happening to the park?

A $60 million revitalization is underway — fresh landscaping, a reimagined amphitheater, and an elevated boardwalk out over the water.

Stop 2 of 4Winter Park

Rollins College

Spanish-Mediterranean buildings on a lake, with Park Avenue on the other side.

Brick streets, an oak canopy that meets overhead, and chapel bells you can hear four blocks out.

Why 'Little Europe'?

Winter Park was founded in the late 1800s as a winter retreat for northerners, and Park Avenue kept the resort-town polish — boutiques, galleries and brick side streets.

Stop 3 of 4Downtown

Kia Center

Where the Magic play, and why Church Street fills up on a Tuesday.

Thornton Park, if you do not mind the walk back. The stadium and the arts centre are both within a few blocks.

Who plays here?

The Orlando Magic since 1989 — Shaq and Dwight Howard both wore the pinstripes — plus Solar Bears hockey, NCAA tournaments, UFC and arena-shaking concerts.

Stop 4 of 4Audubon Park

Orlando Executive

A working airfield wedged into the middle of the city.

It is the reason the neighborhoods around it stayed affordable longer than their tree canopy suggests.

How old is this airfield?

It opened in 1928 as Orlando Municipal — Central Florida's first commercial airport. Today it's the corporate and general aviation field, three miles from downtown.

What would annoy you about living here?

Walkable blocks cost what walkable blocks cost, much of the housing stock is genuinely old, and event nights turn the surrounding streets into a car park.

  • Lake EolaThe park is the draw and the price. Walkable downtown blocks cost what walkable blocks cost.
  • Rollins CollegeYou pay Winter Park prices for Winter Park oaks. There is no cheap side of it.
