Lake County buys 11 miles of rail line for $23.5M to extend the Wekiva Trail

County commissioners voted unanimously on Aug. 19 to purchase an 11-mile stretch of railroad track for $23.5 million, the corridor that would carry the Wekiva Regional Trail toward Mount Dora, Tavares and Leesburg. Speakers at the hearing included city officials, cyclists and conservation groups; opponents raised maintenance costs and enforcement. The board also approved issuing the full $50 million bond but delayed closing until after the November vote on property-tax Amendment 3.
