The Leu Gardens master plan is shelved
noted Sep 1, 2026
The City of Orlando has decided not to move forward with the conceptual plan and master-planning process for Harry P. Leu Gardens, citing community feedback and uncertainty around Florida’s Amendment 3 and future property-tax revenues. The plan, unveiled in October 2025, had proposed a new visitor center complex overlooking Lake Rowena, a children’s garden, a lakefront outdoor performance stage, and expanded parking for the 50-acre garden just north of downtown — donated to the city in 1961 by Harry P. and Mary Jane Leu, and now drawing nearly 300,000 visitors a year. The city says the pause is not neglect: upkeep continues, “making necessary repairs, addressing aging infrastructure, maintaining existing buildings and grounds,” with the community to be kept informed as decisions are made about the Gardens’ future.
