CFX approved the $2.5 billion Southport Connector

At its December 2025 meeting, the Central Florida Expressway Authority board unanimously approved the Southport Connector: a 15-mile tolled expressway from the Poinciana Parkway to Pleasant Hill Road and east to Florida’s Turnpike, at a scale CFX staff compared to I-4 Ultimate and the Wekiva Parkway. The approval came despite the numbers that killed the project in 2018 — projected toll revenue of $740 million over 40 years covers only 29% of the cost, against the agency’s 50% viability policy — with the Osceola board member asking to pursue partnerships and phasing to close the gap. Poinciana-facing segments run as a hybrid bridge-and-wall structure above congested Cypress Parkway.

21 bridges through the Wildlife Corridor — the compromise route

Cypress Parkway, the 4.8-mile road at the center of the project, carries about 47,000 cars a day — up 25% since 2019 — and CFX projects 66,000 a day by 2050 if nothing is built, versus 56,000 with the Connector. East of Pleasant Hill Road, the chosen route threads the Florida Wildlife Corridor and passes near the Disney Wilderness Preserve; the design carries 21 bridges across an 11.8-mile stretch, a compromise with conservation groups who wanted the entire segment elevated so wildlife could cross beneath. The package also widens Cypress Parkway itself to six lanes and improves local intersections. CFX held its alternatives public workshop for the study in March 2025.

The Southern Beltway piece next door starts construction in 2027

CFX is separately extending State Road 538/Poinciana Parkway 3.1 miles from Ronald Reagan Parkway to County Road 532, with construction beginning mid-2027 and estimated completion mid-2030 — an interchange at US 17/92, tolled ramps at CR 532, and nearly a half mile of bridging over wetlands in the Reedy Creek Mitigation Bank. CFX describes the extension, the Southport Connector, the Northeast Connector and SR 534 as one planned network — the Southern Beltway, a more-than-50-mile arc across southern Central Florida — while FDOT plans to carry Poinciana Parkway from CR 532 to I-4 as part of Moving I-4 Forward.

“Who’s gonna be buying all of these homes??? The costs are skyrocketing and becoming unaffordable for most people or they’re going into major debt because of it and never going to be able to fully own the home…”
